ARE YOUR DREAMS DYING OF LONELINESS?

Beyond Success
Bernard Hiller acting coach and Hollywood performance mentor

Dreams do not die because of failure. They die because nobody listens to them.

Every dream needs attention. It needs to be nurtured, protected, and acted upon. Most people silence their dreams because they are afraid of judgment, rejection, or looking foolish. This causes the dream to slowly die.

A dream cannot survive in secrecy. Silence does not protect the dream. It only protects the doubts and fears surrounding it. Eventually, you must share your dream with someone who can help you. A teacher, coach, mentor, or trusted friend. A dream needs a witness, someone who holds you accountable.

A dream is not an escape from reality. It is a step toward the life you were meant to live.

“A dream is the future introducing itself.”

One reason dreams become lonely is that we share them with the wrong people. You start valuing other people’s opinions more than your own. Your dream is not asking you to know exactly how to achieve it. It is simply asking you not to desert it.

WHY FOLLOWING YOUR DREAMS MATTERS

A dream is your soul’s compass. Pursuing it forces you to develop greater courage, resilience, and self-belief. The real gift of any dream is the person you become on the journey toward it.

The emptiness you may be feeling now is the distance between the life you are living and the life that has always been calling you.

WHY WE ABANDON OUR DREAMS

We abandon our dreams because they make us vulnerable. The moment you declare what you truly want, you risk disappointment and failure. Sometimes it feels safer to pretend you don’t care than to admit how much the dream really means to you.

A seed looks insignificant while carrying an entire tree within it. Your dream may seem small or impossible right now, but you cannot judge its future by its present appearance.

DREAMS NEED MOVEMENT

Dreams cannot live on hope alone. Nothing changes until something moves. Take one step today. Make the phone call. Ask for help. Take the class. Search for answers. Every action sends a message to your dream:

“I have not forgotten you.”

Remember, your dream chose you because it believes you are the perfect person to turn it into reality.

There is emotional damage when you betray your desires. When you say, “I’ll do it,” and do nothing, you teach yourself that you are not serious about your dreams.

Have a dream that has waited long enough?

“Take action.”

10 Practical Tips to Manage Stage Fright Before a Presentation

Beyond Success
Practical tips to manage stage fright before a presentation

Your mouth feels dry, your heart races, and your hands may tremble slightly. This is stage fright, and it can affect both new speakers and seasoned professionals.

The good news is that these uncomfortable sensations don’t mean you are failing; they usually indicate that you care about your performance. The objective isn’t to eliminate your nerves but to manage stage fright before a presentation. This way, you can channel your energy positively, letting it work for you rather than against you.

Below is a straightforward, practical blueprint you can use before any pitch, talk, or performance, helping you step on stage feeling prepared, grounded, and truly present.

Your Pre-Presentation Blueprint: From Anxious to Assured

Stage confidence doesn’t happen in the last 30 seconds backstage. It’s built in the hours and days before you speak. Use these 10 steps as your personal pre-presentation checklist to manage stage fright and turn worry into focus.

Tip 1: Reframe Your Nervous Energy as Anticipation

Physically, fear and positive anticipation feel very similar: a fast heartbeat, quick breathing, and an alert mind. Instead of “I’m terrified,” try:

  • “My body is gearing up to help me.”
  • “This energy means I’m ready.”

That tiny language shift changes how your brain reads your sensations.

Tip 2: Know Your Audience, See Your Allies

Stage fright grows when you imagine a room full of critics. Do a little homework instead:

  • Who are they?
  • What problems or goals do they care about?

When you see the audience as people you’re there to help, you stop performing atthem and start speaking withthem.

Tip 3: Master Your Material, Then Make It Conversational

Nothing calms nerves like real preparation. Know your key points so well that you could explain them in a hallway conversation.

Avoid memorizing every word. When you cling to a script, one forgotten line can trigger panic. Aim for a clear structure and flexible, natural language instead.

Tip 4: Rehearse on Your Feet, Out Loud

Reading slides in your head isn’t rehearsal. Stand up, speak out loud, and move as you plan to on stage.

This helps you:

  • Hear your pacing
  • Feel where gestures fit
  • Build “muscle memory” for the real moment

Your body learns the talk, not just your mind.

Tip 5: Craft and Memorize a Powerful Opening

Stage fright is usually highest at the start. Write one strong opening line or short story and practice it until it feels easy to say.

Once you nail your first 20-30 seconds, your breathing settles, your voice steadies, and the rest of the presentation feels far more manageable.

Tip 6: Use Strategic Breathing to Reset Your Body

A simple pattern like inhale for 3, hold for 4, exhale for 5 is enough to calm your nervous system.

Do a few rounds:

  1. Breathe in through your nose for 3
  2. Hold for 4
  3. Breathe out slowly for 5

Use this before you go on and during any pause when you feel tension rising.

Tip 7: Visualize Success, Not Collapse

Instead of replaying worst-case scenarios, run a different mental movie:

  • You walk on stage steady and grounded
  • Your ideas come out clearly.
  • People are listening, nodding, and taking notes.

Visual rehearsal primes your brain to recognize this scene as familiar and safe.

Tip 8: Warm Up Your Body and Voice

A tight body makes stage fright feel worse. Spend 2-3 minutes:

  • Rolling your shoulders and neck
  • Shaking out arms and hands
  • Humming or saying a few tongue twisters

You’re reminding your body, “We’re safe. We’re ready to speak.”

Tip 9: Create a Short Pre-Speech Ritual

For the last five minutes before you present, follow the samesimple routine every time. For example:

  • Two rounds of your breathing exercise
  • One grounding phrase: “I’m here to serve, not to impress.”
  • A strong, relaxed posture

Over time, this ritual becomes a signal to your brain: now we focus, now we speak.

Tip 10: Shift Focus from Yourself to the Value You Bring

Stage fright often sounds like: “How do I look? What if I mess up?” Swap that for:

  • “What do they need from me right now?”
  • “How can this information help them today?”

When your attention moves from self-judgment to service, you naturally manage stage fright before a presentation and connect more deeply with your listeners.

Conclusion: Your Journey to Fearless Communication

Stage fright isn’t a personal flaw; it’s a habit of the body and mind that can be retrained. With preparation, simple physical tools, and a clearer focus on your message, you can walk into high-stakes rooms with more calm, clarity, and genuine presence.

For over three decades, Bernard Hiller, a Public Speaking Coach in Los Angeles and Acting Coach, has used these kinds of principles, along with deeper performance and mindset work, to help Oscar-winning artists, global executives, and leaders communicate with power and authenticity. Acting Challenge Participation Guide: The Confident Actor’s Playbook

Beyond Success
Acting Challenge participation guide by Bernard Hiller

Your name has just been called. Your heart races, your hands feel a bit shaky, and your mind whispers, “Don’t mess this up.”

What if that rush of energy didn’t paralyze you, but instead empowered you to deliver your most authentic performance? This acting challenge participation guide is designed to help you prepare, perform, and engage with clarity and confidence.

Phase 1 – Acting Challenge Participation Guide: Prepare From the Inside Out

Before worrying about the panel or the camera, start with your inner world.

1. Reset your mindset

  • Take three slow breaths and name what you’re feeling: “I’m nervous and ready.”
  • Replace “What if I fail?” with “What can I discover in this scene today?”
  • Write one line before every rehearsal: “I belong in this room.”

2. Go beyond memorizing lines

Treat the material as a person, not just text: Ask: What does my character want? What stands in the way?

  • Write a brief backstory: where they came from, what just happened, and their hidden fear.
  • Rehearse with different emotions to avoid a single “safe” choice.

3. Get technically ready

  • For self-tapes: clean background, soft light, clear sound, camera at eye level.
  • For in-person: wear simple clothes that don’t distract and allow movement.
  • Schedule short, focused rehearsals instead of one long, exhausting session.

Phase 2 – Perform: Bring Presence, Not Perfection

When the challenge starts, your job isn’t to “be impressive” t’s to be present.

  • Do a quick warm-up: stretch your body, hum or lip-trill, speak a few lines out loud.
  • Take in the room or lens before you start. Acknowledge the space, then drop into the moment.
  • Listen like it’s real life. Even in a solo piece, imagine the other person in front of you and react to them.
  • If you forget a line, breathe, stay in character, and continue. Staying connected matters most.

Phase 3 – Enroll With Confidence

Many talented actors lose opportunities not on stage, but in the details.

Before you submit:

  • Review the challenge brief: check age range, piece type, time limit, file format, and deadline.
  • Match your headshot and résumé to the project’s vibe. Highlight roles and training that fit this challenge.
  • Create a simple ritual: once everything is ready, say, “I did my work. Now I let it go,” then hit submit.

Following this guide, you’ll treat each challenge as career training, not a judgment on your talent.

To go deeper with this inner and outer work, consider joining Bernard Hiller’s masterclasses or online coaching, or enroll in his powerful trainings to grow your craft, confidence, and career as an actor. For structured guidance and real industry insight, take action by visiting his website to explore his programs or get his book, The Revolutionary Guide to Acting, as your next bold step as an artist.

How Voice Acting Classes in Los Angeles, CA, Help You Speak Like a Pro

Beyond Success
Communication Expert in Studio City - Bernard Hiller

Why does one person’s voice fade into the background while another grabs your attention? It’s not just about how high or low their voice is; it’s about how connected they are to their words.

When you search for voice acting classes in Los Angeles, you’re not just looking to improve your microphone skills. You’re also deciding how you want to express yourself and connect with others every time you speak, whether in a studio, on camera, or in front of an audience.

Beyond Sound: What Your Voice Really Communicates

Many people think the key to a better voice is just about body posture and projection. But that’s only dealing with the surface.

True voice training begins from within. It teaches you to:

  • Breathe in a way that relaxes you
  • Connect your feelings to what you say naturally
  • Focus on the moment instead of worrying about how you sound

As you practice, you’ll not only improve your voice but also change how your body and mind feel when others are listening.

Why Voice Acting Skills Matter in Leadership and Business

Great actors and leaders share important skills, such as using their voices effectively. Voice acting classes help you:

  • Present your ideas confidently
  • Lead teams in an engaging way
  • Stay calm and steady under pressure

These classes provide a safe space to practice, try new things, and make mistakes. This way, when you’re really tested, your voice will be clear and expressive.

Why Your Real Voice Connects More Than a Flawless One

Real change comes when you stop trying to imitate others. Modern voice coaching combines exercises such as looking in the mirror, paying attention to your body, and checking in with your feelings using “I feel…” statements. This helps you recognize your authentic voice instead of just performing.

When you embrace your real sound, your depth, vulnerability, and strength, you undergo a significant transformation: you stop pretending to be confident and genuinely become confident.

Treating the Studio Like an Emotional Gym

Improving your voice skills involves both feeling and technique. In a guided setting, you practice expressing emotions such as anger, sadness, joy, fear, and love without shutting down. This helps you build:

  • Emotional strength
  • Flexibility when facing challenges
  • A calm state of mind that you can use before important events like auditions or speeches

The more you practice, the easier it becomes to speak honestly and confidently, rather than feeling anxious or falling back on old habits.

Ready to Claim Your Authentic Voice?

If you’re looking for voice acting classes in Los Angeles, CA, and want more than just basic tips, you want training that truly changes how you communicate and express yourself. Bernard Hiller is a public speaking and acting coach with over thirty years of experience. • One-on-one or small group video sessions
  • Practice for your upcoming talks, pitches, or panels
  • Specific feedback on how you sound, your pacing, and being genuine
  • Recorded sessions to help you track your progress

The aim is not to change who you are, but to help you communicate more clearly, be more confident, and create a better experience for your audience.

DYNAMIC SPEAKING AND 9 POWERFUL EXERCISES

DYNAMIC SPEAKING AND 9 POWERFUL SPEAKING EXERCISES

Powerful, Effective, and Dynamic speaking, is a skill and an art that must be learned, developed, and practiced daily if you want to achieve greater success. There are a number of tools and techniques that you will need to employ to enhance your communication skills and with time and effort, you can perfect them.

There are two categories of human communication. They are verbal and nonverbal. How well you communicate with both will determine what kind of life you’re going to live. To live the life, you’ve always dreamt of will depend on how effectively you communicate.

Speaking and communicating is like a sport that must be practiced every day. I will give you nine exercises that will help you to improve.

WAKE UP YOUR BODY AND VOICE

Before starting these exercises, warm up your body by doing jumping jacks or running in place, and don’t forget to stretch. WAKE  YOUR ENTIRE BODY UP!

Then make your mouth as big as possible and move it around (like your chewing gum) in the circular motion for 5 minutes. Warm up your voice on a hum, use different pitches for your hum. Then once your vocal cords feel sufficiently warm, open your mouth to let your diaphragm support the sounds that are coming out. The weird,  stranger, and freer the noises are, the better. If you get louder,  ensure you are always supporting your breath from your diaphragm,  do not push your breath from your vocal cords.

SMILE

When you speak, speak from a very positive place. SMILING always helps. Ensure that your voice and sound are focused on the person you are talking to.

BE A WORDSMITH

Expand your VOCABULARY! People judge you by the choice of words you use. Choose them carefully. Try learning 5 interesting new words every day and avoid using slang.

FIND THE POWER OF YOUR VOICE

When you speak, your voice is the primary link between you and your listeners. Every time you address a colleague, friend,  significant other, or an audience your mind, body, and voice all play an important role with your listeners. The greatest tool you have as a speaker is having a strong and dynamic presentation.

9 POWERFUL SPEAKING EXERCISES

  1. Speak for 10 minutes every morning, look in the mirror and tell yourself how amazing you are. Speak until you believe your words and motivate yourself. If you cannot inspire yourself to change, chances, are you will not be able to change anyone else. That means that you have to connect to your energy and passion.
  2. Talk to someone special about what you want, need, and feel. Use ‘I’ statements like “I need this”, “I want this” and “I feel this.” Expressing personal feelings and emotions are the most difficult.  For communication to be powerful it has to be personal and meaningful to you.
  3. Take singing lessons not just to improve your singing, but to help you find your voice. Singing and taking powerful acting exercises will help you discover what is it that you have to say. What is your unique message to the world?
  4. Be aware of your body language. When you speak, look into the other person’s eyes, letting them know you care. Keep checking your body language. Your body should be conveying the same message as your words in order to be effective. Notice your breath. Take five breaths and follow each inhale and exhale. Shift your awareness from your breath to your body and begin to scan through the body slowly from head to toe, observing any tension,  feelings, or emotions that may be present.
  5. “Listen with your blood.” Active listening is the most important factor in having a constructive dialogue in business and life. It’s not what you think they said, but what they meant. Try understanding and connecting with other people’s intentions, feelings, needs, and wants. This is called empathy.
  6. Talk to 3 new people every day. You must be willing to leave your comfort zone for this practice to be effective. Pushing yourself to speak under pressure will improve your ability to speak in any given situation.
  7. Go into a very busy restaurant or other exclusive places where they require a reservation or an appointment for service. Once they tell you that they cannot accommodate you right at that moment, use your charm, humor, and well-chosen words to convince them into giving you what you requested. This will only work if you do this with love and humility. You will discover that if you put your intention into getting something, you can achieve it. I know that great words and the right energy can change any situation.
  8. Record yourself reading poetry or text and play it back. Find your diction, articulation, and your vocal power. This is finding the tone, the pitch, and the specific sound that is pleasing to the ear. This is what makes people want to listen to you. Sometimes voices are too nasal or too squeaky and very hard on the ear making them not appealing nor do we want to listen to. The sound you make when you speak is the most crucial factor when communicating.
  9. Find a rousing or powerful piece of text that you emotionally connect with, which also has deep meaning for you. Read it out aloud every day with energy and power. For example, the “I have a  dream” speech by the legendary civil rights leader, Martin Luther  King, is a passionate, emotional, and inspiring speech.

“I Have A Dream” (an excerpt from the speech below).

I have a dream that one day this nation will rise up and live out the true meaning of its creed: “We hold these truths to be self-evident;  that all men are created equal”…I have a dream that my four little

children will one day live in a nation where they will not be judged by the color of their skin, but by the content of their character.

I have a dream today…

I have a dream that one day every valley shall be exalted, every hill and mountain shall be made low, the rough places will be made plain, and the crooked places will be made straight, and the glory of the Lord shall be revealed, and all flesh shall see it together.

With this faith, we will be able to work together, to pray together, to struggle together, to go to jail together, to stand up for freedom together, knowing that we will be free one day. This will be the day when all of God’s children will be able to sing with new meaning,  “My country ’tis of thee, sweet land of liberty, of thee I sing. Land where my fathers died, land of the Pilgrims’ pride, from every  mountainside, let freedom ring.”

And if America is to be a great nation, this must become true. So let freedom ring from the prodigious hilltops of New Hampshire. Let freedom ring from the mighty mountains of New York. Let freedom ring from the heightening Alleghenies of Pennsylvania! Let freedom ring from the snowcapped Rockies of Colorado! Let freedom ring from the curvaceous slopes of California! But not only that; let freedom ring from Stone Mountain of Georgia! Let freedom ring from Lookout Mountain of Tennessee! Let freedom ring from every hill and molehill of Mississippi. From every mountainside, let freedom ring.

Beyond Success
Professional acting classes in Los Angeles with Bernard Hiller

Unleashing one’s creativity on stage can be an exhilarating yet daunting task. At the heart of this challenge is improvisation, a powerful tool that can ignite the spark of spontaneity and innovation. This article aims to delve into the art and science of improvisation, helping performers unlock their creative potential.

Improvisation isn’t just about thinking on your feet, it’s about tapping into the wellspring of creativity that lies within us all. It’s about breaking free from the shackles of the script and daring to explore uncharted territories. From seasoned actors to novice performers, everyone can benefit from understanding and mastering this craft.

So, get ready to embark on a journey of discovery, where we’ll unravel the mysteries of improvisation and how it can transform your stage presence. Let’s unlock the door to your creativity and set the stage for unforgettable performances.

Understanding Improvisation: A Brief Overview

Improvisation, often considered the heart of live performance, acts as a bridge between an artist’s intuitive creativity and their immediate audience response. Instead of adhering to a predetermined script, improvisers rely wholly on their instincts, experiences, and inter-performer connections, concocting a performance in real-time. Take, for instance, comedic improvisation teams such as The Second City or Upright Citizens Brigade; their spontaneous sketches showcase improvisation in its rawest form, captivating audiences with unscripted entertainment.

However, it’s crucial to grasp that improvisation isn’t about randomness or abrupt reactions. It might appear spontaneous and unplanned, but, in fact, it’s a result of meticulous preparation, keen observation, and a deep understanding of the character’s perspectives. In essence, an impromptu performance represents a blend of instinct, experience, and flexible storytelling.

Improvisation prompts performers to traverse territories unexplored by rehearsed lines, embarking on artistic adventures manifested in the moment. It cultivates a freedom of expression that scripted performances sometimes constrain. When done well, it’s an on-stage magic trick, mystifying the audience who wonder, ‘How did they come up with that on the spot?’

But, unlocking the power of improvisation doesn’t come without challenges. Aspiring performers might find it daunting due to its unpredictable nature, while experienced veterans may struggle with defying the comfort of a script. Yet, regardless of one’s stage experience, anyone can harness the transformative power of improvisation with practice and insightful guidance. By understanding and implementing improvisation, performers manifest authentic, impactful performances – a priceless skill in the world of live performance.

The Connection Between Improvisation and Creativity

Within the world of acting, improvisation emerges as a catalyst for creativity. It facilitates an unscripted, spontaneous form of expression that resonates with audiences and enhances a performer’s artistic capabilities.

The Benefits of Improvisation for Creativity

Harnessing the power of improvisation contributes to creative growth. It compels actors to tap into their intuition and respond instantaneously, cultivating mental agility. This process unveils a spectrum of emotions, character interpretations, and narrative possibilities that scripted performances might overlook, thereby bolstering creativity.

Real-Life Examples of Improvisation Boosting Creativity

Significant examples accentuate the role of improvisation in fostering creativity. For instance, Marlon Brando’s iconic scene in ‘On The Waterfront’ where he improvised playing with Eva Marie Saint’s glove, adding a layer of authenticity and depth to his character. Similarly, Robin Williams’ extensive improv in ‘Good Morning, Vietnam’ resulted in remarkable bursts of creative genius, demonstrating the transformative power of improvisation on stage. These instances validate the integral role of improvisation in fueling creativity, offering tangible insights for performers aiming to enhance their craft.

The Art of Improvisation On Stage

Unraveling improvisation leads performers into a realm of spontaneous creativity on stage. This section sheds light on the significant techniques for improvisation and provides profound insights through successful case studies.

Essential Techniques for Stage Improvisation

Mastering improvisation requires a deep understanding of certain foundational techniques. The adoption of “Yes, and…” approach mandates actors to embrace offered ideas and expand them creatively. Emphasizing active listening aids performers in nuanced responses, while maintaining eye contact ensures non-verbal communication. Breaking the Fourth Wall, a technique often utilized in improvisation, breaks the imaginary barrier between actors and the audience, promoting direct interaction. Another essential technique involves committing to the character without hesitation, amplifying authenticity. Remember, practice holds the key for performers to gain fluency in these techniques, facilitating impactful improvisation on stage.

Case Studies of Successful Stage Improvisation

Acclaimed actors have deftly incorporated improvisation, enhancing the depth of their performances. The iconic monologue in ‘Taxi Driver’ (1976), where Robert De Niro’s improvised “You talkin’ to me?”, accentuated the protagonist’s isolation and paranoia. Renowned for his unparalleled improvisation skills, Robin Williams improvised most of his dialogues in ‘Good Morning, Vietnam’ (1987), adding a touch of realism and spontaneity. In ‘Casablanca’ (1942), Humphrey Bogart improvised the line “Here’s looking at you, kid”, which became one of the film’s most memorable quotes. These instances underscore improvisation’s immense potential in enriching on-stage performances.

Role of Improvisation in Different Performance Genres

Exploring the importance of improvisation, performances across genres appear differently influenced. Take, for instance, theater, dance, and music.

Improvisation in Theater Performance

Theatrical improvisation breathes life into scripted plays. It pushes actors to adapt on the spot, offering fresh air into potentially stale scripts. Successful improv troupe “Chicago City Limits” exemplifies this, crafting new plays spontaneously, their performances are captivating, fluid, and unique.

Improvisation in Dance Performance

Dance improv too, provides freedom for performers. It’s a practice where movements unfold spontaneously, unchoreographed. An outstanding example falls with “Gaga,” an improvisational dance technique developed by Ohad Naharin. The focus here lies in bodily sensations, releasing the dancer’s instinctual movement and creativity.

Improvisation in Music Performance

Lastly, musical improvisation presents a deep and powerful form of spontaneous artistic expression. Jazz musicians like Miles Davis consistently revealed new melodies in live performances, showcasing musical spontaneity at its peak. Such inspiration often led to legendary performances, highlighting the indispensable role improvisation plays across genres.

How to Hone Your Improvisation Skills

Mastering improvisation skills unlocks a profound depth of creativity on stage. It’s about training the mind to respond instantly, tapping into innate creativity, and emotionally connecting with the audience.

Tips and Tricks for Effective Improvisation

Embracing the ‘Yes, and…’ principle forms the cornerstone of effective improvisation. It encourages players to accept and build upon their co-actors’ ideas. Practicing active listening intensifies concentration, enabling actors to respond naturally and instantly. Actors also benefit from maintaining eye contact, allowing for powerful non-verbal communication and exhibit authenticity of character, immersing completely in their roles. One notable example includes the troupe “Chicago City Limits,” renowned for their unrehearsed performances that share unique narratives.

Training and Courses for Improvisation

For those looking to elevate their improvisational skills, targeted training and expert guidance are key. Bernard Hiller’s approach to improvisation training goes beyond traditional methods, emphasizing the development of personal style and creative freedom. While renowned programs like “The Second City” and “Upright Citizens Brigade” offer valuable insights and practical experience, Bernard Hiller’s unique training focuses on refining individual instincts and breaking through creative boundaries. By participating in these specialized courses, performers can push their improvisational abilities to new heights, embracing a level of expression and spontaneity that traditional training might not provide.

Challenges and Solutions in Improvisation

Improvisation in performance faces common challenges such as fear of failure, resistance to new ideas, and excessive planning. To mitigate these, performers should espouse an open mindset, welcome spontaneity and view mistakes as learning experiences. To overcome improvisation hurdles, strategies include using the ‘Yes, and…’ approach to encourage collaborative creativity, active listening for accurate interpretations and responses, maintaining eye contact for non-verbal communication, and commitment to character authenticity for credibility. It’s also important to have extensive practice under professional guidance to enhance improvisational skills and foster creativity.

Conclusion

In the world of live performance, unleashing your creativity through improvisation can be both exhilarating and challenging. Whether you’re a novice stepping into the spotlight or a seasoned professional seeking to refine your craft, understanding and honing these essential skills can elevate your performances. From emotional authenticity to physical expressiveness, let’s explore the practices that could turn good actors into great ones.

So, ready to dive into the world of acting? Let’s embark on this journey to unravel the secrets behind captivating performances and the art of embodying different characters. Stay tuned as we delve deeper into the realm of acting skills and practices that can set you apart in this competitive industry.

Understanding Essential Acting Skills and Practices

With a grasp on the significance of acting skills and practices, it’s time to delve deeper. This section unpacks the role of emotional expressiveness and physicality in acting, essentially representing the heart and form of the craft respectively.

The Role of Emotional Expressiveness

Emotional expressiveness plays a pivotal role in acting, enabling performers to convincingly adopt different personas. The steepest acting challenge often lies in portraying emotions genuinely and compellingly, prompting audiences to empathize with the character. Authentic emotional expressiveness propels an actor’s performance from mere recitation to gripping storytelling.

Actors refine their emotional expressiveness through methodologies such as Stanislavski’s system, stimulating real emotions for depicted scenarios. Emulating emotions like joy, sorrow, rage, and affections believably characterizes accomplished actors. For instance, Meryl Streep’s emotional versatility considerably contributes to her reputation as one of the finest actors in cinematic history.

The Importance of Physicality in Acting

Beyond emotional expressiveness, physicality proves equally crucial in acting. The body serves as an instrumental tool in conveying a character’s identity, attitude, and state. Physical representation essentially breathes life into a character, transforming words on a manuscript into a potent on-stage or on-screen presence.

Techniques like Viewpoints and Laban Movement analysis instruct actors on maneuvering their bodies as per a character’s requirements. The depiction of a character can vary from capturing subtle facial expressions to executing grand, dramatic gestures. Renowned silent film actor, Charlie Chaplin, notably excelled in utilizing physicality, primarily relying on non-verbal cues to narrate compelling stories.

Mastering Key Acting Techniques

After taking an initial look at the fundamentals of acting – focusing on emotional authenticity and physical expressiveness – a seamless transition into the world of key acting techniques proves vital. These methodologies further assist actors to hone their craft, enabling them to deliver exceptional performances that capture an audience.

Method Acting: A Deep Dive

An integral part of an actor’s toolkit, Method Acting encourages a complete immersion into the character’s emotions, often leading to performances that resonate with audiences on a profound level. This technique hinges on an actor experiencing the emotional journey of their character personally, utilizing their own memories and emotions to stimulate genuine responses.

Founded by Konstantin Stanislavski, it’s actively practiced by notable thespians such as Daniel Day-Lewis, an actor well-known for his immersion in his roles. For instance, while portraying Abraham Lincoln in “Lincoln”, Day-Lewis demonstrated the effectiveness of Method Acting by remaining in character even when the cameras weren’t rolling, thereby projecting an unfaltering and authentic portrayal of Lincoln’s character.

Improvisation Skills for Spontainty on Stage

Improvisation is another powerful technique that actors implement to achieve spontaneity on stage or film. It’s a practice that grants flexibility, allowing actors to respond intuitively to unexpected developments during performances. This skill cultivates a palpable sense of realism and in-the-moment presence in scenes, enhancing the overall believability of the performance.

A shining example lies in the work of Robin Williams in “Good Will Hunting”. Several of his lines were improvised, most memorably the anecdote about his character’s wife farting in her sleep. This off-the-cuff addition provided an intimate, human element to the film, underscoring the nuances that Improvisation can bring about. By mastering this valuable skill, actors can create dynamic, engaging performances that truly stand out.

Voice and Speech Training

Continuing from the value of emotional and physical expression, this section details another crucial acting practice: voice and speech training. Actors find it essential to communicate effectively, with ample vocal resonance, articulation, and diversity.

Developing a Strong, Clear Speaking Voice

In acting, strong and clear speech reigns paramount. It’s not just about volume, it’s about quality. Communication hinges on an actor’s ability to articulate words distinctly, bringing emotional weight and authenticity into their performance. This necessitates regular vocal exercises such as diaphragmatic breathing, tongue twisters, and vocal warm-ups. Through consistent practice, actors enhance their vocal strength, range, and clarity, thereby improving their overall performance. Let’s take Meryl Streep as an example. Her profound vocal richness and clear delivery contributed largely to her acclaimed performances in diverse roles.

Mastering Accents and Dialects for Diverse Roles

Accents and dialects further magnify an actor’s versatility. With an arsenal of different speech patterns, actors broaden their character range – thus opening new doors in their acting career. British actor Hugh Laurie, known for his natural British accent, demonstrated this skillfully. For the medical drama series “House,” he adopted an American accent. His convincing performance earned him the Golden Globe for Best Actor. To achieve such commendable feats requires rigorous linguistic training and studying with dialect coaches. This demonstrates the demanding, yet fruitful path towards mastering accents and dialects.

These subsections demystify voice and speech training, emphasizing these elements’ impact on an actor’s career. They underline the necessity of continuous learning and adaptation, shaping a more complete and versatile performer.

Building a Character

After appreciating the vitality of basic acting skills and understanding the art of effective communication, one cannot overlook the art of building characters. It encompasses not only persona development but also bears the weight of contributing to the narrative’s credibility. This major acting skill detangles several aspects such as conducting prior research, developing backstory, maintaining consistency, and ingraining believability in each performance.

Research and Backstory Development

Before embodying a character, considerable pre-production work aids the actor’s engagement with their role. Research forms the bedrock of this preliminary phase. Characters derive their roots from diverse social backgrounds, professions, and life experiences. Hence, a thorough understanding of these elements makes an actor’s portrayal more authentic. For instance, to get under the skin of his character Forrest Gump, Tom Hanks delved deep into the life of an intellectually impaired individual from Alabama and displayed magnificent mastery over his mannerisms and accent.

On similar lines, crafting a convincing backstory breathes life into the character. The actor immerses oneself in the character’s past, their relationships, their accomplishments, and their failures. The rendition of Tony Stark by Robert Downey Jr. in the Marvel Cinematic Universe provides an excellent illustration of this, as it weaves a rich tapestry of past experiences and motivators that make his character more relatable.

Consistency and Believability in Performance

In addition to groundwork, consistency in performance acts as the linchpin of credibility while essaying roles. Actors must uphold stability in their character’s mannerisms, accent, and emotions to sustain the audiences’ belief in the persona. Daniel Day-Lewis exemplifies this concept with his steadfast commitment to each of his characters in films such as “My Left Foot” and “There Will Be Blood.”

The Rehearsal Process

In the art of acting, navigating the rehearsal process effectively requires a foundation in critical skills and practices. This section guides on mastering two essential aspects of rehearsals: memorization techniques and fostering effective collaborations.

Memorization Techniques and Practices

Memorization serves as the pillar holding up an actor’s performance, shaping their confidence, fluency, and credibility on stage or screen. Actors employ various techniques to memorize their scripts, each differing based on individual learning style and preference.

  1. Repetition: Actors often read their scripts repeatedly, drifting the words from short-term to long-term memory.
  2. Chunking: This technique involves breaking down the script into manageable pieces, often separating scenes or even single lines. It simplifies the process and allows for focused memorization.
  3. Visual Mnemonics: Some actors associate script lines with visual images, enhancing recall.
  4. Movement: Linking physical actions or stage directions with lines can solidify memory and improve fluidity in performance.

Collaborating Effectively with Directors and Co-Actors

In the realm of acting, collaboration is not optional — it’s essential. The rehearsal room functions as a space for creative convergence, demanding cooperation and communication for compelling performances.

  • Open Communication: Clear, transparent communication with directors and co-actors eliminates misunderstanding and creates a harmonious working environment.
  • Flexibility: Staying flexible encourages adaptation, essential when adjusting to different directorial visions or adopting suggestions from co-actors.
  • Respect: Professional respect preserves the integrity of relationships, fostering an atmosphere conducive to creativity and mutual growth.
  • Active Listening: A key collaboration skill, active listening thoroughly absorbs directions, adapts to co-actors’ performances, and builds a stronger performance tapestry.

Conclusion

Mastering the craft of acting isn’t a simple task. It requires a blend of emotional authenticity, physical expressiveness, and a well-honed voice. Yet, it doesn’t stop there. Deep character development, backed by thorough research and consistent performances, sets apart the greats like Tom Hanks and Robert Downey Jr. Memorization techniques and effective collaborations further enhance an actor’s repertoire, leading to compelling performances. However, it’s the continuous learning and adaptation that truly allows actors to thrive in this ever-evolving industry. So, whether you’re a budding actor or a seasoned professional, remember: acting is an art that demands constant growth and evolution. Embrace it, and you’ll find yourself delivering performances that are not just believable, but unforgettable.

Boosting Confidence and Self-Esteem: Building a Positive Self-Image

Beyond Success
Boost Confidence and Self-Esteem

In the quest for personal growth, confidence and self-esteem are two pillars that can’t be overlooked. They’re the driving force behind our ability to face challenges head-on and bounce back from failures. But what if you’re struggling to cultivate these qualities?

In this enlightening journey, we’ll explore practical strategies to boost your confidence and self-esteem, ultimately paving the way for a healthier, more positive self-image. We’ll delve into the psychology behind these concepts, providing you with a deeper understanding of their importance in your daily life. Get ready to break free from self-doubt and embrace your true potential.

Understanding Confidence and Self-Esteem

In any journey towards personal growth, grasping the concept of confidence and self-esteem proves vital. It acts as the bedrock on which the building blocks of a positive self-image are founded.

Difference Between Confidence and Self-Esteem

Confidence and self-esteem, although intertwined, exhibit distinct differences. Confidence roots itself in the belief in one’s abilities. For example, a talented tennis player might possess a high level of confidence in her ability to win matches due to her developed skill set.

On the contrary, self-esteem revolves around the evaluation of one’s worth. It doesn’t hinge on specific abilities or talents. A person with high self-esteem values himself, irrespective of his talents or accomplishments. For instance, despite not being a remarkable cook, an individual can still hold a high level of self-esteem;

Confidence Represented By
Belief in abilities The tennis player who consistently wins matches
Self-Esteem Represented By
Value of self Individual who is not a remarkable cook but values self

The Importance of a Positive Self-Image

A positive self-image is paramount to personal growth. It constitutes a positive perception of oneself, that’s not shaped by external influences. A positive self-image impacts how one interacts with the world. It influences the way people perceive situations and confront challenges.

A person with a positive self-image won’t let a single failure dictate their worth; they recognize that failure is a part of growth. To illustrate, if a student doesn’t ace a math test, he doesn’t devalue himself as a person – he either finds a different study method or recognizes that math might not be his forte and focuses his energy on subjects where he excels.

Positive Self-Image Examples
Doesn’t let one failure dictate worth Student who didn’t ace a math test but doesn’t devalue self

The Connection Between Confidence, Self-Esteem, and Positive Self-Image

Exploring the intertwining links among confidence, self-esteem, and positive self-image presents valuable insights. Interconnected in numerous ways, these three aspects, when cultivated and maintained, drive personal growth and establish an empowering outlook on life.

How Confidence Impacts Self-Esteem

Confidence, seen as belief in one’s abilities, dramatically impacts self-esteem, the overall evaluation of one’s self-worth. When an individual possesses confidence, he’s more likely to embrace a healthier level of self-esteem. For instance, those with a deep belief in their abilities and skills, such as a chef confident in his culinary capabilities, tend to value their worth and potential positively. Notably, confidence acts as a building block for self-esteem, and cultivating it often leads to an enhanced self-view, contributing to an overall resilient mindset.

How Self-Esteem Affects Your Self-Image

Examining the influence of self-esteem on self-image, it’s evident that high self-esteem translates into a positive self-image. Self-esteem, centered on the concept of self-worth, shapes how individuals perceive themselves, indicating the critical role it plays in defining self-image. Women who value their skills, talents, and appearances, for example, are more likely to develop and maintain a positive self-image, which translates to a healthier outlook on life. Thus, nurturing self-esteem yields a positive ripple effect on self-image, amplifying personal contentment and the ability to face life’s challenges with gusto and resilience.

Practical Tips for Boosting Confidence

Cultivating a strong sense of self can be invigorated through specific, actionable steps. This section offers meaningful insights into these strategies, including effective goal-setting, fortifying relationships, and acquiring new skills.

Setting and Achieving Goals

Setting achievable goals provides an objective way for individuals to measure their progress and build their confidence. Firstly, break down overarching objectives into small, manageable chunks. For instance, if the primary goal is running a marathon, start by setting weekly running distances. This approach makes the task less daunting, leading to a higher likelihood of achieving the goal, thereby promoting self-belief.

Each achieved goal, no matter how small, serves as a positive reinforcement, boosting self-esteem. Appreciating each milestone constructs a foundation of assurance. Meanwhile, encountering difficulties or setbacks offers opportunities to grow and adapt, reinforcing resilience, an essential component of confidence.

Building Strong Relationships

Instilling robust relationships contributes significantly to validating individual self-worth. Nurturing supportive and trustworthy connections, both personal and professional, helps to reinforce a positive self-image. These relationships serve as mirrors that reflect an individual’s strengths and capabilities.

An example of this dynamic involves when a person learns new behavioral attributes through interaction with more experienced colleagues. In the process, this person improves not only relationship-building skills but also heightens confidence in their professional capacity.

Learning New Skills

Engaging in new learning experiences enlightens individuals and, in turn, nurtures their self-esteem. Mastering a new skill, be it baking, playing a musical instrument, or learning a new language, confirms a person’s aptitude for growth and learning.

For instance, learning how to code from online resources demonstrates to an individual that they can adapt to technological advances. This experience, consequently, enhances their confidence in their capability to face new challenges. Each and every acquired skill serves as a pillar, solidifying the edifice of self-esteem and positive self-image.

Strategies to Enhance Self-Esteem

Building self-esteem demands targeted strategies. It’s a gradual process that requires commitment and practice. The following subset offers a deep dive into effective techniques for enhancing self-esteem.

Self-Affirmation Techniques

Self-affirmation techniques offer a valuable strategy. They involve verbalizing positive assertions to oneself. For example, one could affirm that they’re capable, worthy, or strong. Affirmations shouldn’t consist of false positivity but of genuine, attainable beliefs. Research indicates these techniques bolster resilience, leading to improved self-esteem over time.

Overcoming Negative Self-Talk

Negative self-talk impends the fostering of self-esteem. It’s the internal dialogue that belittles oneself, fostering melancholy and self-doubt. Curtailing these thoughts begins with mindful awareness. This involves recognizing the negative thought patterns and consciously challenging them. Studies show transforming negative self-talk into constructive feedback significantly enhances self-esteem.

Keeping a Self-Love Journal

A self-love journal aids in promoting a positive self-image. It’s a personal space to pen feelings, achievements, and self-affirmations. This reflection bolsters awareness of self-worth. For example, noting achieved goals encapsulates progression, enhancing positive self-perception. Evidence suggests that maintaining a self-love journal fosters self-esteem by providing tangible evidence of personal growth.

Nurturing a Positive Self-Image

A positive self-image forms the cornerstone of your confidence and self-esteem. It’s inseparable from them, and fostering it further enriches these qualities.

Practicing Body Positivity

Embracing your unique physical appearance equates to reinforcing a positive self-image. Body positivity allows you to celebrate your individuality rather than fixating on supposed imperfections. Everyone possesses different body types, shapes, and sizes. It’s hence wise to refrain from comparing oneself with others. Instead, cultivate an appreciation for your unique physical self. This appreciation, in turn, strengthens the body image.

Cultivating Optimism and Resilience

In striving towards a positive self-image, optimism and resilience play pivotal roles. Progressive thinking fuels self-acceptance, while resilience helps you maintain this self-acceptance despite life’s adversities. Adopt a positive outlook by focusing on strengths and accomplishments rather than failures. Building resilience, on the other hand, requires one to face and recover from setbacks. By fostering resilience, you can tap into the strength that shields your self-image even in challenging situations.

Surrounding Yourself With Positive Influences

Your environment affects your self-perception. Surrounding yourself with supportive and positive individuals helps nurture a welcoming, encouraging environment. These positive influences can boost your self-image. These might include people who acknowledge your worth, motivate your pursuits, and value your individuality. By choosing such an environment, you catalog your focus on positivity. Thus, you better align your self-concept with reality, warding off negative distortions.

Conclusion

Confidence and self-esteem are essential for personal growth and a positive self-image. By understanding and developing these qualities, you can better face challenges and unlock your potential.

In addition to the strategies discussed, consider personalized support like the life coaching offered by Bernard Hiller Acting & Success studio. Their tailored coaching sessions help you build self-confidence, manage performance anxiety, and enhance your self-worth.

Beyond Success
Professional acting classes in London with Bernard Hiller

Imagine standing in the spotlight, heart pounding, palms sweating, and hundreds of eyes focused on you. That’s stage fright, a phenomenon that even the most seasoned actors grapple with. This article aims to shed light on effective strategies to conquer this common fear.

From Broadway veterans to aspiring thespians, stage fright doesn’t discriminate. It’s a normal human response to the prospect of performing in front of an audience. But don’t worry, it’s not an insurmountable hurdle.

With the right approach and techniques, you can transform this fear into a powerful performance tool. So, if you’ve ever felt your confidence wane before stepping onto the stage, this article is for you. Let’s dive into the world of acting and explore practical ways to overcome stage fright.

Understanding Stage Fright

Next in this unfolding narrative comes an examination of stage fright, sweeping across the diagnostic symptoms and causative factors. Here, readers delve on a deep-dive analysis into comprehending this common actor’s nemesis.

Identifying Symptoms of Stage Fright

Recognizing signs of stage fright paves the way towards effective intervention. A variety of symptoms may manifest, including, but not limited to, a rapid heartbeat, dry mouth, trembling hands, knees, lips, and voice, as well as sweating and nausea. Actors might experience negative thoughts, fear of forgetting lines, or fear of being judged. Additionally, severe cases can induce panic attacks.

Psychological and Physical Causes of Stage Fright

Understanding the causes of stage fright contributes significantly to addressing it effectively. From a psychological perspective, stage fright roots itself in the fear of public humiliation, judgment, and making mistakes under the scrutiny of an audience. Physically, intense nervousness triggers the body’s ‘fight or flight’ response, culminating in adrenaline rush, increased heart rate, and a surge of energy. These physical reactions, though natural survival instincts, can impede an actor’s performance on stage.

Methods to Overcome Stage Fright

Embarking on the journey to conquer stage fright begins with understanding two central methods: cognitive and behavioral techniques. Directed at comprehending and controlling the mind, these techniques offer promising strategies to control stage fright and bolster performance.

Cognitive Techniques for Managing Stage Fright

Cognitive techniques dive into the realm of the mind, scrutinizing thought processes, beliefs, and attitudes. Listed below are various cognitive methods that actors have found beneficial for managing stage fright:

  1. Visualization: Envision performing successfully. Artists like Beyonce and athletes such as Michael Phelps offer examples of successful application of visualization techniques.
  2. Cognitive Restructuring: Change fear-inducing thoughts to ones that empower. Refer to works of Dr. Albert Ellis for more on cognitive restructuring.
  3. Positive Affirmations: Recite uplifting statements like, “I’m confident and well-prepared.” Louise Hay’s book, “You Can Heal Your Life,” illustrates the use of positive affirmations.
  4. Mindfulness Meditation: Embrace the present moment, cultivate calm, and quell anxiety-induced thoughts. Mindfulness pioneer Jon Kabat-Zinn’s work affirms the value of these practices.

Behavioral Techniques to Control Stage Fright

Contrasting with cognitive techniques, behavioral methods focus on changing the way actors behave during the stress of a performance. These distinct techniques equip actors with the tools to modify their physical reactions:

  1. Deep-Breathing Exercises: Encourage relaxation by controlling the breath.
  2. Progressive Muscle Relaxation (PMR): Release tension stored in the muscles through PMR. Dr. Edmund Jacobson’s research provides some evidence-based methods.
  3. Regular Physical Exercise: Maintain a regime of physical fitness to promote overall well-being and stress tolerance.
  4. Exposure Therapy: Gradually expose oneself to public performances, scaling from a small to larger audience over time.

By employing these cognitive and behavioral techniques, actors can learn to navigate their stage fright, morphing it from a hindrance into a propellant for a exhilarating performances.

Dealing with Stage Fright as an Actor

Moving forward, let’s delve deeper into specific coping mechanisms and techniques utilized by actors to manage their nervousness during performances.

Coping Mechanisms for Actors

Actors employ various coping mechanisms to manage stage fright. Firstly, they engage in mental rehearsal, where they visualize their entire performance in their minds. Visualization not only helps actors anticipate their actions on stage but also creates neural pathways in their brains, making the envisioned actions seem familiar and less daunting.

Next, deep breathing exercises serve as an effective strategy. Deep, controlled breathing helps regulate the body’s physiological responses to fear, thus reducing symptoms like fast heart rate and shaking hands.

Furthermore, adopting a positive mindset serves as a crucial coping mechanism for actors. This involves using positive affirmations and self-talk to challenge and alter the negative thoughts that fuel performance anxiety. For example, instead of thinking, “I’m going to mess up,” an actor might tell himself, “I have rehearsed well and I can do this.”

Lastly, physical activities such as yoga, tai chi, and other forms of exercise provide physical release of the stress and tension associated with stage fright, helping actors maintain a calm demeanor on stage.

Techniques Actors Use to Manage Nervousness

Besides the coping mechanisms mentioned above, actors rely on several tactics to manage their nervousness. First is preparation; meticulous rehearsal and knowing their lines backwards and forwards gives actors the confidence to perform. Similarly, knowing the ins and outs of the set, props, and stage layout helps actors feel more at ease during performances.

Secondly, connect with the audience. Rather than viewing the audience as a threat, seasoned actors perceive them as collaborators in the storytelling effort, thus reducing feelings of fear.

Moreover, using a method acting strategy, actors focus on embodying the character they’re playing. By being ‘in character,’ actors can bypass their own personal fears and focus on expressing the emotions and motivations of the character.

Lastly, peer support is critical in managing stage fright. Sharing and discussing fears and concerns with fellow actors create a supportive environment that can significantly ease performance anxiety.

Tips for Dealing with Stage Fright on Performance Day

Fighting on-stage anxiety necessitates mental and physical preparation before-show and time-tested strategies during performances. This section outlines methods to help actors effectively manage stage fright on the day of their performance.

Preparing Mentally and Physically Before Performances

Before performing on stage, actors can try different strategies to prepare themselves both mentally and physically.

An actor’s state of mind contributes significantly to his performance. Engaging in meditation or visualization exercises can beneficially transform their mental state. Visualization is a common method whereby actors picture their successful performances, which significantly reduces anxiety.

Physical exercise, particularly yoga, proves helpful for actors in flowing adrenaline in a positive manner. Yoga practices such as deep breathing and progressive muscle relaxation exercises reduce physical manifestations of anxiety such as rapid heartbeats and trembling.

Striving for sufficient sleep and sticking to a healthy diet can contribute positively to an actor’s physical state. Adequate rest and nourishment ensure that the actors can exert the required energy and concentration during their performances.

Strategies for Managing Stage Fright During Performances

During performances, managing stage fright involves a set of strategies used in the heat of the moment.

One tactic is focusing on the characters and embodying them entirely. By doing so, the actor shifts his focus from their anxiety to the character they are portraying on stage. It’s a technique that provenly lower stress levels during performances.

Inventorying audience members individually is another tactic effective in decreasing anxiety, it offers a cognitive shift from seeing the audience as a large, intimidating group to individual human beings.

Lastly, adopting the mantra ‘practice makes perfect’ can routinely help manage stage fright. Frequent exposure to the stage reduces an actor’s fear, steadily improving their confidence and performance over time. Regular practice sessions allow actors to familiarize themselves with their roles, the stage settings, and the audience layout, laying the groundwork for them to harness stage fright positively. Regular practice assists actors not only to memorize their roles and cues but also gain confidence in performing in front of an audience.

Real-Life Success Stories

Translating the strategies for overcoming stage fright into action brings vivid results in actors’ performances. An array of celebrated actors has successfully used similar techniques.

Actors Who Have Overcome Stage Fright

Hollywood stars aren’t immune to stage fright; quite a few have confronted and conquered their fears, illuminating pathways for nervous actors. Here are three specific instances:

  1. Sir Laurence Olivier, one of the greatest actors of the 20th century, battled severe stage fright throughout his career. His fear often left him physically ill before performances. Sir Olivier adopted methods such as deep breathing and visualization exercises [source: Biography.com]. His exercise of envisioning success before going on stage was instrumental in overcoming his fear, thereby enabling mesmerizing performances that won him accolades worldwide.
  2. Adele, the renowned British singer, has openly admitted her struggles with acute stage fright, stating that she’d get sick before concerts due to the nerves [source: Time.com]. Adele attributes overcoming stage fright to various strategies like deep breathing, systematic desensitization, and cognitive restructuring.
  3. Barbra Streisand, despite being an award-winning star, suffered a debilitating stage fright that kept her away from live performances for almost 30 years [source: NYTimes.com]. She credits her return to therapy, meditation, and reframing negative thoughts into positive ones.

These laudable individuals demonstrate that stage fright can be tamed, allowing actors to deliver performances that captivate audiences. Their experiences underline the importance of employing effective strategies to manage stage anxiety, which, when mastered, can transform debilitating fear into a powerful force propelling compelling performances.

YOUR VOICE DETERMINES YOUR LIFE!

Beyond Success
YOUR VOICE DETERMINES YOUR LIFE!

YOUR VOICE DETERMINES YOUR LIFE!

When a baby is born, everyone waits to hear the voice that announces the child’s arrival. They make a very loud sound when they cry, which signifies that they are tired, hungry, or in pain. They are trying to communicate with all the noises they can make.
We are unique in that we start our lives trying to communicate verbally, even when we don’t yet have the language skills.
The voice is the most powerful instrument in the human body.

That’s why singing is so effective in penetrating our hearts.
Know that, “Your voice is the mirror to your soul.”

How effectively you are using your voice will determine your success in love relationships, business, dreams, career, and every single aspect of life! Your voice transmits your feelings, emotions, hurts, wants, and needs from you to others.

I’ve been a public speaking trainer for the past 28 years, and I’ve noticed that people around the world have more problems communicating now more than ever before. One of the reasons is the emergence of the digital age. We’ve started texting, twitting, and emailing as a way to communicate. Therefore, interpersonal relationships have suffered greatly. A recent survey said that people feel more comfortable expressing their feelings by texting rather than speaking to that person. That is so sad!

I’ve also noticed that people have vocal blocks given to them by their family, friends, or teachers. A vocal block is when you were told to be quiet as a child when you wanted to say something. They made you feel as though you have nothing of value to say. This affects a child’s voice greatly. Another common vocal block is when you were told to stop singing or were severely shamed and ostracized in school for having different opinions!

IMPROVING YOUR VOCAL SKILLS – IMPROVES YOUR LIFE!

When you’re unable to communicate fully you lose a huge part of yourself.

In business having powerful verbal skills are crucial if you want to improve productivity and have a more talented workforce. Only confident communicators can bring clarity and direction to a company. The ability to be a dynamic speaker is a skill you must acquire. A great speaker is someone who can transform the listener not just give them directions or information. This is not an easy thing to do, but with training and practice, one voice can change the world.

How you communicate will determine the quality of your life, relationships and it has the ability to resolve or prevent problems. If you want to be acknowledged you must be heard. This is also a big problem. The sound, tone, loudness, facial expressions, and body language while speaking are all major factors. If we cannot hear you, we don’t care what you are saying.

A speech without emotions and passion is meaningless. Emotions and passion gets people’s attention, trust, interest and will give you the ability to persuade others. When you improve your speaking and communication skills, your self-esteem gets better. How you communicate also affects how much money you will earn during your lifetime.

I want you to express yourself fully because then you will become a better partner, parent, friend, co-worker, and human being. Once you let your inner voice express itself, you will discover your talents, gifts, and ideas.

Especially This Year – Find Thanksgiving!

For those of us celebrating Thanksgiving, know what a wonderful holiday it can be. Being human in 2020 has been – well, devastating. However, goodness, kindness, and love are still there.

Giving thanks helps us to recognize and appreciate all the good things we have in our lives. This year, that may be difficult to do. We need to actually take the time and see the blessings and gifts we currently have.

When you live like this, you realize how beautiful the world is to inhabit. Taking this journey will make you feel powerful and energized. When you start living the spirit of Thanksgiving your life instantly gets better.

“Until you love the life you have, you will not be able to have the life you want.”

I am grateful to so many people who have enriched my life this year. A heartfelt thank you to all my organizers, teachers, and special guests whose words and artistry inspire me. I feel so fortunate to know and work with all of you. I could not have accomplished all that I have done without you!

I feel lucky to have such supportive friends and family. And to my wonderful children – David and Dora – you teach me the meaning of love and fun – especially through these hard times.

This year, contact those that matter the most, and let them know how grateful you are for having them in your life. We need to hear these words. They give us the courage to believe that better days are ahead.

A Corona Wake Up Call!

This crisis is reminding us that we are all on this earth TOGETHER. A virus doesn’t discriminate between people, language, cultures, gender or religion. Rich or poor we are all struggling to survive this disease together.

Our human bodies are the vehicles each of us were born in. Some take care of their bodies, and some don’t.
But we all get just ONE!

How we move through the world does vary – do to your upbringing, society, attitude, and what we consider to be important. But when a crisis comes into our lives, it makes us re-evaluate our life and the choices we have made.

Crisis will come and go. But we need to learn how to ride out the storm so that we can witness the beautiful rainbow that follows.

Know there is always hope and inspiration around you. But only what you are looking for, will you find.

In a crisis without support and the love of others, you will not succeed.
Know that you have the ability to save a life through your kindness and caring.
And by saving a life, you also save a family.

You have so much good inside you. This situation gives you an opportunity to give that, and there are many people out there in need of it.

There are no accidents. Everything that comes into our lives teaches us a lesson. Even this corona-virus can actually help us grow to become a better person. It also forces us to readjust our life.

True happiness only comes, when you have 2 things. A life of meaning and loving relationships.
A Crisis makes you realize, that this, is all that really matters.

We are all part of one planet, one race, the HUMAN RACE.
A Corona Crisis lets us all know that no matter our differences we are all in the same BOAT!
Only by staying together and rowing in the same direction can we survive and thrive!

A crisis creates isolation and loneliness. Today reach out to your loved ones and talk about Something Else. There will be life after this. Make people laugh, laughing is the great comforter and lets them know, we will overcome this.

HOW TO STAY CALM DURING A PANDEMIC

Beyond Success
how to stay calm during a pandemic blog header

HOW TO STAY CALM DURING A PANDEMIC

Millions of people are working from their homes. Schools are closed, large gatherings prohibited and grocery store shelves are empty. And there are some people not taking coronavirus seriously at all. With so many sources of stress and anxiety coming your way, this is too much to cope with. It’s normal to feel extremely overwhelmed when something this global is impacting every part of your life.

“Remember keep finding your center.
For in the eye of the storm, things are calm.”

In this article, I’ve also included the best advice from some of the leading psychiatrists in the field of stress and anxiety management. Fear and uncertainty is always the common response for people who don’t understand what is going on. We feel this threatens our safety and the safety of our loved ones. But don’t give into fear!

This event is impacting everyone around the globe. But this is also a growing moment. An opportunity to bring your family together, and to bring yourself together by realigning your priorities.

Pandemics makes one feel unsafe and resulting with social isolation.

Here are 3 things you can do to survive and thrive during this crisis:

1. Stop watching the news all the time.

There’s a fine line between staying informed and drowning in media panic overdrive.

The more news I watch, the more stressed I become, so please find the off button.

Health officials even say, “give yourself a break.”

Also what you read on social media is often sensationalized to keep you on their site, or just simply false.

So check with the CDC and the World Health Organization to find out what’s really happening.

2. Look out for others

Life feels out of control right now, so it’s important for you to focus on the things that are within your control, helping to keep your loved ones safe, is something you can do. You could also reach out to an elderly neighbor who may need some groceries.

During crises some people isolate themselves for personal safety. Ok, that’s good! But, it DOESN’T MEAN you shouldn’t call or facetime your friends, co-workers and family. You must stay connected.

Remember after this situation passes. I want you to proud of how you behaved during these trying times. It’s really a test of your humanity.

When you call – please don’t be upset or yell at them. They need your support not for you to increase their stress levels. It’s important that you provide your loved ones some relief. So, talk about other things. Life will eventually get back to normal. Make them laugh, laughter is a great comforter. Let them know we are all in on this together. Stay connected!

3. Become mindful.

Not knowing what the future holds is one of the main reasons why people feel so anxious, so you must now focus on surrendering to the PRESENT. Yes, the Present.

A way to do that is to use meditation techniques or breathing exercises.

After you calm your mind, make a list of all the things to be grateful for.

You have your health, the sun is still shining, you have food, and so much more.

Focus on all the good things that you have in your life right now.

Fear only exists when you can’t live in the grace and beauty of the present.

Surrender and you will find the powerful meaning of these moments.

The whole world is stopping and reassessing itself and that’s good.

Send us your comments and please share. (source Cory Stieg)

***************

One thing is for sure, this crisis will pass. But it’s important that you monitor how you act during this pandemic.
Reading about how people behaved during the pandemic of 1918, it was sad to know that people turned against each other.

They totally disconnected from their neighbors and friends. But, they felt ashamed of how they behaved afterwards.

Don’t be like them.

During these difficult times, show your kindness, compassion and think how you can help and support one another.

You will feel better about yourself once it’s over.

Together We Can Overcome Anything! (Please Share)

YOUR IMPERFECTION IS PERFECTION!

Beyond Success
Your Imperfection Is Perfection!

Perfection is the voice of our oppressor. People who told us as we grew up, that if we were not perfect – we would not be wanted or loved.

Life brings amazing surprises, once you let go of your need for Perfection.

Perfectionism lives in a feeling that you are never good enough, and when you live in that fear, you will never make choices that move you forward. You will miss your life! Actually we were never designed to be perfect.

Only through trial and error can you discover your possibilities.

As an acting coach, I encourage all my artists to show us their imperfection, their humanity on stage, because then, the audience will connect with you.

To succeed you must explore, try and be willing to be imperfect. When you attempt to do something new, of course you will not be great at. Because that’s not the point, it’s the effort that’s important, not the result.

This doesn’t mean that you don’t strive to be your very best. Of course, you do. But strive for being human, not perfect.
Trying to be “perfect” always causes frustration, unhappiness, sadness and eventually feeling like a failure.

You are now adults, and you can choose to let go of the need to perform or behave in a certain way for someone else’s approval. The world becomes a more interesting and fun place when you are free to be YOU. Once you realize this, you can begin to take yourself less seriously and have a lot more joy

“I believe that your imperfections is what makes you perfect.”

YOU MUST BE ABLE TO SAY “NO”, TO SUCCEED!

Beyond Success
YOU MUST BE ABLE TO SAY

Do you want to accomplish more? Do you want to live a happier, more productive and meaningful life?

Now, I often speak about the importance of saying “YES”, but you also have to know when to say NO!

People who are not excited about the quality of their lives have not said “no” enough. Like…

NO – to people who are getting you involved in their drama, so you don’t have time to pursue your own life.
NO – to living in your comfort zones, which is slowly killing your soul every day.
NO – to situations that keep robbing you of your energy.
NO – to your past that doesn’t allow you to live in joy.
NO – to your limited ideas, that you have gotten from others.
NO – to society telling you how you should live your life!

The reason most people feel afraid to say no to others is that they feel they will lose their friend’s or families’ love and affection. Know that true friends and family love you for who you are.

To value yourself more, you must say NO to the things that are just not good for you. You need to create boundaries for yourself. You need to know what is non-negotiable for you. You need to fight with passion for what you want in your life, or you will automatically get what you don’t want.

Do the relationships you have to teach you to believe in yourself more? Does it make you grow? Toxic relationships will kill your talent and your spirit. So, ask yourself:

“Do I feel better or worse after having spent time with that person?”

If it’s worse, then you are letting them take away your power. You will lack energy, be lost, angry, confused and finally sad and depressed.

Knowing when and how to say NO, is one of the most important keys to a happy and meaningful life.
